The Power of Crisis Intervention: Why In-Person Training Matters

When disaster strikes, the first moments of response can make all the difference. Whether it’s a mass casualty event, a workplace tragedy, or the daily stressors faced by first responders, immediate and structured crisis intervention has been proven to reduce long-term psychological distress.

But is crisis intervention truly effective? Research says yes.

The Science Behind Crisis Intervention

Decades of studies confirm that crisis intervention—when applied quickly and strategically—can be more effective than long-term therapy initiated later. As Rapoport (1965) observed, “A little help, rationally directed and purposely focused at a strategic time, is more effective than extensive help given at a period of less emotional accessibility.”

Evidence backs this up:

🔹 Workplace-based crisis intervention after disasters has been found to be more effective than multi-session counseling in the acute phase. (Boscarino, Adams, & Figley, 2011)

🔹 Israeli soldiers who received crisis intervention during the 1982 Lebanon War experienced significantly lower levels of long-term distress than those who did not. This was confirmed in a follow-up study 20 years later—proving that early intervention has lasting effects. (Solomon & Benbenishty, 1986; Solomon, Shklar, & Mikulincer, 2005)

The evidence is clear: Timely crisis intervention helps individuals recover faster, builds resilience, and improves long-term well-being.
